Lacie 1TB USB Hard Drive Review 3/5

I purchased this hard drive about 3 months ago for £70.

I was attracted to it because of the huge amount of data it can hold and the cheap price. It was the cheapest 1TB external hard drive that I could find so I went ahead and purchased it.

The design of the HDD is very sleek and nice. There is no getting round the fact that it is quite large but I think the designer/designers have done a good job with it. The entire enclosure is black glossy plastic, its so glossy it reflects everything around it as you can see in the pictures!

Once plugged in the bottom of the HDD lights up blue. I love LED lighting on anything so personally I think its a very nice touch.

Good points:

2 year warranty - I love a long warranty, it gives me confidence in the product and makes me think the manufacturer knows what they are doing.

The blue LED lights

High Speed USB 2.0 - its pretty much standard now for all external drives but my first one was USB 1.0!

Transfer rate - 480Mbits/s

Bad Points:

I guess the size is an issue, it is on the large size and no matter how good it looks it will be bulky in a laptop bag.

External power. I know with a HDD this size you should expect an external power supply however I have seen some external HDDs that just take up 2 USB ports. I think if this was implemented this HDD would be one of the best, if not the best HDD on the market.

I give this 3/5 stars. If it was a little smaller and was powered by USB it would get a definite 5 stars.
