Sometimes there are games that come along that clearly deserve to be in the top ten of the paid apps chart. Fans of Doodle Jump and the Angry Birds series should definitely check out this new release and recent UK number one by Zeptolab, called Cut The Rope.

Having discovered your newfound pet monster Om Nom in a box on your doorstep, the objective of the game is to feed him candy by cutting a series of ropes within the box. How or why the candy came to be suspended on ropes above the little guy is unclear, but then again you just gained a pet monster named Om Nom… so who cares.

The game uses swiping and multi touch gestures to cut each rope. The aim of each level is to drop a piece of candy into the mouth of your sugar craving pet, whilst collecting gold stars along the way for added points. Time is also a factor and completing the levels in a rapid time also racks up the points (and gives the opportunity to compete with your friends).

To begin with the game is predictably easy and requires the player to simply cut a number of ropes in the right sequence in order to proceed to the next level – sounds simple enough. As you progress through the game however, you are slowly presented with increasingly challenging obstacles all hoping to part your pet from his candy.  This begins with awkwardly placed spikes and eventually ranges to candy eating spiders and laser beams. All hope is not lost however as the player is provided with tools to use along the way. Using bubbles, balloons and elastic rope the player can navigate their way around the nasties - but this obviously becomes more and more difficult as you progress.

The controls are incredibly simple and aside from popping the occasional bubble when you meant to cut the attached rope, there is very little room for improvement. Using real physics to swing your candy from one side of the screen through a laser beam and avoiding that dastardly spider, actually proves quite rewarding (and I couldn’t help but give myself a pat on the back after each difficult level).

The visuals are stunning and it is clear that the overwhelming cuteness of the game has been a priority during development. The bright colors and artwork that resemble a Saturday morning cartoon are incredibly attractive, and it is difficult for anyone not to find it appealing.

Similar to the Angry Birds games, there are currently 4 different themes and then 25 levels to each theme with the promise of more to come in future updates – well worth the 59p in my opinion.

If I were to sum the game up in three words they would be addictive, entertaining and cute. This has certainly been the game I have played the most this week and it truly deserved its number one status on the app store.

Cut the Rope scores a 5/5! Will be playing it for months to come!
