BlackBerry App: BuddyGuard Pro by Terra Mobility 4/5

The app sells itself as a security tool which allows you to remotely control your BlackBerry using commands sent by SMS or Email.

Using BuddyGuard you can lock the device, ping its location, make it play a noise (to find a lost phone) and if worst comes to the worst remotely wipe all data and software from the device.


It has a number of quirks like detecting if the SIM is changed and notifying a pre set number of the change. Another feature is what they call "Panic Alert", it sends a panic SMS, Email or makes a phone call to the emergency services.The user decides which numbers the SMS and Emails are sent to and the emergency phone call is made to either 911, 999 or 112.

To activate the Panic Alert you set a hot key which then needs to be pressed 5 times. I could see this being very useful however in the event of an emergency I would feel much better talking to the emergency services myself. This would be good as a backup/last resort though.


The current list of commands is:

* ALERT: Assists in finding your phone by playing a tone, even if it's is in silent or vibrate-only. Locks your phone to ensure no one can access it.

 * LOCK: Protects your data and phone by locking it and displaying your contact information. Will stay locked until you enter your password, even if your BlackBerry® is rebooted! 

* LOCATE: Finds the BlackBerry®'s coordinates and sends you a mapped link to it's location. 

* BACKUP: Remotely backup your contacts. Use to archive your current contacts, or save them if you need to wipe your phone. 

* LIST: Emails you a listing of the data on your phone. Allows you to verify what a Wipe will do without actually deleting your data. 

* WIPE: Remotely wipes your BlackBerry® to prevent someone from accessing your personal data. Removes Calendar, Contacts, Emails, Phone Logs, Memos, Tasks and Files on your SD Card and in Device Memory. 

* HELP: Remotely receive a listing of the available commands

Overall I give this app 4/5. Normally it would get a 3 however given the low price tag and the power of the remote commands it defiantly deserves a 4. I will be leaving this on my device just in case it ever gets lost or stolen! I really think every BlackBerry user should have this app, it makes sense to be able to track it and remotely lock it.
